Annapolis Roads Community Purchases Green Willow Property

Second Property Purchase Strengthens Ongoing Community Preservation
Campaign

ANNAPOLIS, Md., April 11  -- The Annapolis Roads Property
Owners Association (ARPOA), a socially and environmentally progressive
community located on the Annapolis Peninsula in Maryland, today announced
that community residents have completed the purchase of a parcel of land
known as Green Willow.
The Green Willow property was purchased from Barrow Builders, LLC, in a
negotiated agreement where 3.5 acres of the original 4.7 acres will
eventually be put into a permanent conservation easement with the balance
divided into two residential house lots. Consistent with the community's
previous demonstrations of unity on land use issues and their ongoing
Community Preservation Campaign, ARPOA voted 284 to zero to approve the
purchase.
The Green Willow property is a wooded parcel located at the front of
the community that is a natural buffer between the community and the noise,
light, and air pollution from the adjacent Bay Ridge Road and act as
natural vista for visitors to the adjacent Peninsula Park. The property
also filters storm water runoff draining through to ARPOA's environmentally
sensitive shoreline on Lake Ogleton, which is part of the tidal Chesapeake
Bay. "Wooded areas contribute substantially to our community's quality of
life as was intended in the original community design," commented Walter
Bigelow, ARPOA's President. "The Green Willow purchase helps our community
retain its green and open space design as originally planned by Frederick
Law Olmstead, the innovator of Landscape Architecture." This is the second
time in the past year that the community has successfully negotiated with
property owners to preserve wooded land.
In June of 2005, ARPOA purchased a 33-acre tract in the community known
as Ogleton Woods. The property is one of the last 100+ year-old forests on
the Annapolis Peninsula, and will be permanently conserved in its pristine
condition for future generations.
"The residents of ARPOA are setting an example for all of the
communities on the Annapolis Peninsula. Annapolis does not have to suffer
from poorly planned development and its consequences: congested roads,
crowded schools, overburdened police, fire and emergency services, and the
severe degradation of the environment and the Chesapeake Bay. Citizens and
communities can act, independent or with the support of government and
cooperatively with land- owners, to successfully preserve land and retain
quality of life," commented Anastasia Hopkinson, Vice President of ARPOA.
